Art And Craft In Scope Sustainability

Abstract This study is designed to explain the relation of art and craft within the scope of sustainability and to assess the past and future situation of art and craft in terms of sustainability. Art is the power of creativity; craft is the production systems that reveal the power of the skill. While art requires training and originality, craft requires training and mastery. Nowadays, art has been transformed into a consumption tool that serves the system and since the works of art are produced in series, the production has increased but the quality has decreased. Craft, on the other hand, is in danger of extinction under the influence of industrial development that has lost its former significance. Sustainability, on the other hand, is defined as the ability to be permanent will be effective/influential in preserving the quality of both art and craft products today and in the future. Although art, craft and sustainability seem to be opposite concepts, they have to act together for the future of the world and the living things. Within the scope of sustainability, art and craft need to change the purchasing requirements of individuals in order to strengthen their perception and to renew their production and sales policies in terms of ethical and environmental scientific aspects. The development of production and consumption conception forces art and craft to be restructured according to the requirements of environmental, cultural, economic and social sustainability. Therefore, art and craft production processes should be restructured in the context of sustainability; and production and consumption methods should be redefined. It is significant to strengthen the perception of sustainability in the consumer by creating the environmental awareness in the minds of producers and in their products. In this direction, art and craft need to be redesigned and defined for "sustainability" in order to serve the future of the world. This study draws attention to the necessity and significance of art and craft in creating a sustainable world. In addition, examples of related art and craft history have been included. These examples have also emphasized the existence and importance of sustainability in the past and the future.
