Portraits of The Sultan in El-Kiyâfetü’l-İnsâniyye Fi Şemâili’l-Osmaniye Manuscript With Inventory Number T. 6087 in The Rare Books Library Of The University Of İstanbul
Abstract
Although the first examples of sultans portraitures in Ottoman painting were produced in the 15th century, it was in the last quarters of the 16th century that the style matured and classical examples emerged. Sultans portraitures the early period has on ottoman painting been exemplified in the context of the works of artists such as Sinan Bey, Bursalı Şiblizade Ahmed and Nakkaş Nigari. The classical period of sultan portraiture is form Osman Gazi, to III. Murad It is represented by the tradition that settled in with the portrait of twelve Ottoman sultans. Nakkaş Osman's designs were the beginning of a tradition for Ottoman sultans portraitures, which continued until the middle of the 18th century. In the developing process, sultan portraits were painted many times by using the same mold both in Nakkaş Osman workshop, in other workshops or by other artists. Although the exact number of Şemailname copies illustrated in Nakkaş Osman's workshop is not known, it is known that there are many copies preserved in different museums or libraries. One of these copies is the manuscript of Istanbul University NEKTY06087 Inventory Number El-kıyafetü'l-insaniyye fi şemaili'l-Osmaniyye. The portraits in the manuscript, in which the portraits of twelve sultans are depicted, are similar to the portraits in the copy preserved in the Topkapı Palace H. 1563, except for minor differences in details. In the article, the Ottoman sultan portraits in the Istanbul University copy of El-kıyafetü'l-insaniyye fi şemaili'l-Osmaniyye with Inventory Number NEKTY06087 were compared with the Topkapı Palace copy
