READING IONESCO'S RHINOCEROS WITH GIRARD'S THEORY OF MIMETIC DESIRE

Two French, Ionesco and Girard, who started production during the reconstruction period of the western civilization that survived two world wars were left their mark on the era they lived. While Girard blazed a trail in literary criticism with his Mimetic Desire Theory, at the same time, Ionesco wrote important examples of the absurd theater that had a great impact in theater world. These authors, who developed their works within the framework of the basic existential of the individual, created the most important intellectual breaks of the 20th century. Girard who defens that desire has a mimetic nature is emphasizes that it will be more useful to read contemporary theories through classical texts while exemplifying his theory through classical texts. This study aims to read together a theory and a play that produced in the same period. The dramatic analysis method is used in this study that Ionesco's play Rhinocéros-Rhinos was read with René Girard's theory of Mimetic Desire. The aim of this study is to discuss the mimetic desire theory with a contemporary theater play, open it to discussion mimetic desire through Ionesco's play Rhinoceros. This study suggests an alternative approach to absurd theater, pointing to a point that has been ignored and ignored enough in the literature.
