A RESEARCH ON THE DETERMINATION OF USER-ORIENTED POTTER LATHE DESIGN CRITERIA

Pottery production, which begins with human history, is defined as  ” obtaining commercial and artistic products such as pots, vases, plates and jars by shaping and cooking clay by special methods". These products are shaped by hand, mold, press or using a potter's lathe. However, Potter's lathe is the most widely used method today, as it provides easier and faster production. Because it was only used in pottery making in the past, this machine is called a “potter's lathe” and the user is called a “potter”. Potter lathes, depending on their function and the used material, get names such as “mud lathe”, “ceramic lathe”, “mud loom”, “Potter wheel”, “Potter loom” and lathe”. The first examples of Potter's lathes are quite simple and primordial. These primitive potter lathes, usually made of clay, stone and wood, have undergone many design changes over the centuries and have survived to the present day. However, the rapid progress of technology allows this process of change to continue.

This work was performed in the city Faenza of Italy in 2018. XVI TORNANTI was held in the Potter competition. An attempt was made to determine the satisfaction levels of Potter lathe users against existing lathes and their expectations from a newly designed lathe. 19 questions were asked to 32 participants for this purpose. The survey is composed of two parts: ”demographic information “and” product information". The survey was conducted to determine the answers to the questions, product user profiles and product user expectations. As a result of the analysis of the interviews, the difficulties of existing lathes and the expectations of the users from the Potter lathe with a successful design were revealed.
