Transforming Adıyaman Nemrut Sculptures into Quality Design Products: The Case of Ceramic Ocarina


Ceramic, with its deep-rooted history and sociological narrative, has been used in functional and aesthetic forms in many areas; It is an important material that still continues to be used. Ceramic musical instruments, which emerged with the presentation of functionality and aesthetics together, form a part of daily life as well as accompanying ceremonial and ritual music. Considering the archaic processes, it is concluded that ceramics has an important area of use in the axis of music.

In this perspective, the ceramic musical instrument Ocarinas, whose archaic state is based on the Mayans and Aztecs, is the mainstay of the study. Ocarinas have been diversified in different cultures, continents and geographies in different shapes, sizes and different designs. From this point of view, it is planned to transform the sculptures of Mount Nemrut, which is located in Adıyaman and described as the Mountain of the Gods, into an ocarina instrument. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to the strengthening of the bond between music and ceramics by transforming the sculptures on Mount Nemrut, which is on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List, into a functional, innovative design object and musical instrument, and to give a functional quality by giving a voice to an important historical texture in the geography of Turkey.

One of the most important features that a design object should have is function and innovative approach. A good design should have the quality of an innovative and aesthetic object as well as functionality. With this research, the Nemrut sculptures, which are at the forefront of the cultural values ​​of Adıyaman province, were transformed into a functional, innovative design object and musical instrument, thus contributing to the strengthening of the bond between music and ceramics. While this bond is getting stronger; It is aimed to give a voice to the mysterious world of history by attributing a new identity to the Nimrod statues, the most important symbol of the Commagene Kingdom. These sculptures; souvenirs will move away from being an ordinary object and become an instrument that reflects nature; It will also allow people to look at it from a different perspective. It is aimed that ocarinas, which will be produced with an interdisciplinary approach, inspired by the Nemrut sculptures, to belong to a different area.
