Apparels are the ideal indicators of expressing the female body stylistically in general terms. Silhouette is the linear interpretation which determines the external lines of an apparel. It designates the normal form of body or which part of the body will be shown up and how it will be shown up. Silhouettes were shaped in the development of fashion history by various factors such as wars, marriages and political, social, economic and religious events, empires, fashion, fashion icons etc. European apparels were used as a screening model in the research which aims to scrutinize the change in female silhouettes. First, the printed documents, engravings, portraits and miniatures which contain the theme of European female apparels in the 16th and 18th centuries, and visuals of these apparels in collections of various museums were screened. Later, a synthesis was generated by analyzing the determination and designation of the silhouette forms, and their formal characteristics based on the information in sources such as books, magazines and web sites. As part of the research, 203 figures of female visual were scrutinized. Of them, 82 belonged to the 16th century and 121 included the figures of the 18th century. Besides, 48 female visuals which show the clothing features of both centuries ideally and with full size were chosen and included in the study. Forms and characteristics of the silhouettes were compared to the fashion line visually and interpreted. This research monitors the changes in female apparel silhouettes in European clothing. Thus, it is significant for contributing to the current and future studies on fashion history and design, conveying such information and becoming a source.
