Sanat eserinin zamanla değerinin dönüşüme uğradığı bir gerçektir. Sanatçı eseri yaşamını saran kendi zamanı ile ilişki içinde kurarken, eser zaman içinde değerlenerek gerçek değerini bulacağı ana kadar tanınmayı bekler. Ancak pek çok eser için bu durum beklendiği gibi gerçekleşmez. Geçmiş örneklerden bazıları incelendiğinde yapıldığı dönemde önemi anlaşılamayan birçok eser günümüz koşullarında eşsiz olarak değer görmektedir. Yapıla geldiği zamandan günümüze değişimin nedenleri sorgulandığında sanatçı, izleyici ya da eserin fiziki varlığı ile birlikte bu değeri kazandığı düşünülebilir. Zaman sonra eserin gerçek değeri anlaşılır ve hak ettiği değeri bulur. Zaman bu bakımdan değeri ölçen bir süzgeç vazifesi görür. Zaman sanatçının başarısının anlaşılmasında son derece önemli iken zamanı farklı boyutları ile de ele alan sanatçılar vardır. Bunlardan biri de Picasso’dur. Einstein’ın ortaya koyduğu kuramı sanatla ilişkilendiren sanatçı bu bağlamda önemli bir adım atarak zamanı eserlerinin içine dahil etmiştir. Bilim ve sanat arasındaki bu ilişki zaman temelinde kurulmuştur.
