The Metropolitan Museum of Art bu önemli müzelerden birisidir. Bu çalışmada, söz konusu müzede bulunan Büyük Selçuklu dönemine ait tasvirli kâselerin kompozisyon düzenlerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışmada nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden alanyazın tarama ve betimsel analiz kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın evrenini Selçuklu dönemi tasvirli kâseleri oluştururken, örneklemini The Metropolitan Museum of Art’ta bulunan üç adet özgün tasvirli kâse örneği oluşturmaktadır. Araştırma bulguları doğrultusunda, resimlerin kompozisyon düzenlerinin kâselerin formları ile Türk resim sanatının kurgu mantığını birleştiren bir yaklaşımla oluşturulduğu anlaşılmıştır.
Abstract
It can be argued that the majority of early examples in which Turkish-Islamic painting can be defined by specific formal characteristics belong to the Great Seljuk period. This era is significant as it represents the most prominent manifestation of Central Asian Turkish pictorial art within the Islamic world. During the eleventh and twelfth centuries, the Seljuks produced works across various artistic fields, drawing upon earlier cultural heritage and occasionally adopting a synthetic approach within their geographical sphere. Contrary to common convention, Seljuk painting is represented not primarily through manuscript illumination but rather through murals on architectural structures and surface decorations on functional ceramic objects. Among Seljuk ceramics, which exhibit great diversity in form and technique, figurative bowls are particularly noteworthy. These bowls are important not only because they reflect the artistic understanding of the period, but also because their surface compositions provide significant insights into traditional Turkish painting. Given that manuscripts from the Great Seljuk period have not survived to the present day, the pictorial depictions on ceramic bowls serve as invaluable primary sources for the period. Today, it is well known that private collections and various international museums house artistically significant illustrated ceramic bowls from this period; the Metropolitan Museum of Art is one such prominent institution. This study aims to examine the compositional arrangements of figurative bowls from the Great Seljuk period in the collection of the aforementioned museum. The research employs qualitative methods, specifically literature review and descriptive analysis. While the research universe consists of figurative Seljuk bowls, the sample is composed of three original figurative bowls located at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In light of the research findings, it has been concluded that the compositional arrangements of these depictions were constructed through an approach that integrates the form of the bowls with the narrative logic of Turkish pictorial art
