Giyim, insanoğlu için, örtünmek, korunmak gibi temel ihtiyacını gideren bir eşyası iken, zamanla yerini çeşitli misyonlar yükleyerek kullandığı gösterge eşyası olmaya bırakmıştır. Süslenme ve güzel görünme arzusuna cevap verirken, bireyin ait olduğu toplumun kültürel özelliklerinden, dini inancına, sosyal statüsünden giyenin kişilik özelliklerine dair pek çok unsurun da göstergesi olmuştur. Giyim, ait olduğu topluluğun sosyal yapısının özelliklerini, sosyal olaylarını, hatta kullanıldığı dönemdeki toplumun ruh halini dahi yansıtabilen bir gösterge olabildiğinden, toplum için sözsüz iletileri ileten bir sözsüz lisan görevini de üstlenmiştir.

Kıyafet onu taşıyan insan için “bireysel seçki”  olmasının yanı sıra pek çok açıdan ilgili tarihi döneme de ayna tutmaktadır. Dönemin sanat anlayışının yanı sıra, yaşama dair birçok detay da giyim üzerinden gözlemlenebilir. Bu detaylarda, insanoğlunun bedenine dair siluet seçkisi, bedeninde görmek istediği formlar, hayata ve kendine dair güzellik ve estetik arayışına bulduğu cevaplar niteliğindedir seçkileri! Bireyin beden algısı giysinin kesim detaylarında, süslenme duygusu giyimindeki dekor dikişlerinde, zenginlik statü arzusu materyal seçiminde kürklere, ipekli kumaşları kullanmasında, güçlü görünme ihtiyacı nadide unsurların bol kullanımında, azametli görünme ihtiyacı, hacimli ve çok katmanlı giyimleri tasarlamasına neden olmuştur. Rönesans’ın bilim ve güzel sanatlardaki yaratıcılığa olan etkisi ile güzel ve güzel olmaya dair kavramlar yeniden şekillenmiş, bu yeni estetik anlayışı giyim sanatını da etkilemiştir. İnsanoğlunun sosyal statüdeki yeri için aracı kıldığı giyime atfettiği anlam ve görev ihtiyacının zengince karşılanabildiği dönemlerden biridir.

Bu çalışma, Kronolojik giyim tarihinde Elizabeth Dönemi olarak tanımlanan İngiltere Kraliçesi I. Elizabeth’in tahtta kaldığı 1560-1590 yılları arasını kapsayan erkek giyim modasının Yüksek Rönesans’ın etkileri ile kazandığı boyutu, giyim tarihinde iz bırakacak özellikleri ve giyim sanatında gelinen düzeye dair unsurları incelemektedir.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, giyim tarihi perspektifinden belirli bir dönemin kıyafet özelliklerini ele alarak gerek moda tasarımı gerekse de sahne sanatları alanında yapılacak kavramsal veya uygulama çalışmalarına katkı sağlamanın yanı sıra; ilk defa çalışılan bir konu olması boyutu ile de literatüre yenilik getirmesi beklenmektedir. 

While clothes are accessories that meet the basic requirements of mankind such as covering the body and providing protection from external forces, over time, by undertaking different tasks, clothes have also become a means of expression. While responding to the desires of mankind to look beautiful, clothes have also become an indicator that reflect the cultural characteristics, religious believes, social status and personality traits of the society to which the individual belongs. Since clothing can be an indicator that can reflect the characteristics of the social structure of the society to which it belongs, social events and even the mood of the society in the period it is used, it has also undertaken the task of being a non-verbal language for the society.

In addition to its dimension of individual reflection of the person wearing it, the clothing also mirrors the relevant historical period and time frame in many respects. In addition to the artistic understanding of the era, many details of everyday life can be surmised from clothing choices. These details are the answers to the search of humanity for beauty and aesthetics regarding life and oneself, the selection of the silhouette regarding the body frame and the forms they want to see in their bodies. The perception of bodily frame of an individual is evident in the cutting details of the garment, the sense of decoration can be surmised from the stitches in the clothing, and the desire for status can be observed from the choice of material, the desire to look powerful can be observed in direct proportion to the abundant use of rare furs, silk fabrics, and rare elements, or the desire to achieve magnificence can be seen in voluminous and multi-layered clothing choices. With the influence of the Renaissance on the creativity in science and fine arts, the concepts of being beautiful and graceful were reshaped, and this new aesthetic understanding also affected the art of clothing. The Renaissance is one of the periods in which the meaning and duty that mankind attributes to clothing, which it makes an intermediary for its place in social status, could be met quite properly.

This study examines the dimension of menswear fashion, which covers the years between 1560-1590, when Queen Elizabeth the First was on the throne, which is defined as the Elizabethan Period, in the history of chronological clothing, with the effects of High Renaissance, the features that left a mark in the history of clothing and the elements of the level reached in the art of clothing during that period.

This study will contribute to the conceptual or practical studies in the field of fashion design and performing arts by addressing the clothing characteristics of a certain period from the perspective of the history of clothing, and will bring an innovative understanding to the literature with its dimension of being a subject studied for the first time ever
